His father, a military officer,
died when Ivan was ten, leaving his family destitute (without money).

Ivan and his mother moved to St. Petersburg , where Ivan
got a job and started writing plays. His mother died in 1788, when Ivan was
nineteen.

Ivan soon gained a reputation,
making friends with princes, and staying in their large houses.

In 1809 Ivan published his
first book of fables, which was so popular that he stopped writing plays.

Ivan wrote over 200 fables, and
won many awards.
